Energy-efficient renovation of educational buildings.
Summer is the ideal time for many educational institutions to carry out improvements to their facilities. During the school holidays, maintenance work, space renovations and modernization projects are completed to ensure everything is ready for the new academic year.
Alongside equipment upgrades and new furniture, an increasing number of schools, colleges and universities are investing in improving the thermal and visual comfort of their buildings. In this context, technical blinds have become an effective solution for optimizing natural daylight, reducing solar heat gain and creating more comfortable environments for both students and teaching staff.
At Solarcheck, we have spent more than 40 years designing and installing interior solar shading solutions tailored to the needs of all types of buildings. Our experience in educational facilities has shown us how effective daylight and temperature management can positively impact occupant well-being and the day-to-day performance of a building.
The challenges facing modern educational spaces
Educational architecture has evolved significantly over recent decades. New buildings increasingly feature open-plan layouts, glazed façades and greater access to natural light. While these elements offer many benefits, they also introduce new challenges.
Controlling daylight without blocking it
Natural daylight plays a key role in creating pleasant learning environments and supporting student well-being. However, if left unmanaged, it can cause glare on screens, interactive whiteboards and projectors, making teaching activities more difficult.
The objective is not to darken classrooms, but to regulate the amount of incoming daylight to achieve the right balance throughout the day.
Reducing classroom overheating
Heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense. And rising indoor temperatures turn classrooms into uncomfortable spaces for learning and teaching.
During the warmer months, particularly in buildings with extensive glazed surfaces, solar radiation can significantly increase indoor temperatures.
This results in a greater reliance on air conditioning systems, increased energy consumption and reduced comfort for both students and teachers.
Solar control solutions help reduce heat gain through glazing, limiting classroom overheating and improving the well-being of students and teachers, even during the hottest months.
A thermally comfortable environment fosters concentration, reduces fatigue, and improves the experience for both students and teaching staff.
Furthermore, by reducing the need for climate control, the building lowers its energy consumption and improves its efficiency, contributing to educational centers that are more sustainable and better prepared to face the challenges of climate change.
Adapting to new teaching methods
Today’s classrooms increasingly rely on technology. Interactive displays, computers, video conferencing systems and audiovisual equipment all require appropriate lighting conditions to perform effectively.
Solar shading solutions must be able to adapt to these modern educational environments, supporting the use of technology without sacrificing natural daylight.
Why install technical blinds in educational buildings?
Technical blinds provide far more than an attractive appearance. They are specifically designed to manage solar radiation efficiently while improving indoor environmental conditions.
Enhanced visual comfort
One of the main advantages is the reduction of glare and reflections.
Technical fabrics allow solar radiation to be filtered while maintaining consistent and comfortable levels of natural daylight within classrooms. This improves the visibility of screens, projectors and interactive whiteboards, helping students stay focused and engaged.
Improved thermal comfort and energy efficiency
By limiting direct solar radiation, technical blinds help reduce heat build-up inside buildings, creating more comfortable classrooms for students and teachers. By minimizing solar heat gain during warmer months, they also reduce the need for air conditioning, improving the building’s energy efficiency and lowering energy consumption.
Architectural integration
Modern technical blinds are available in a wide range of fabrics, colours and operating systems, allowing them to integrate seamlessly into any architectural design.
From historic buildings to modern university campuses, we develop solutions tailored to the specific requirements of each project.
Solutions for every educational environment
Each area within an educational facility has its own specific requirements and benefits from a tailored solution.
Classrooms and teaching spaces
Technical roller blinds are among the most popular options thanks to their ability to control daylight simply and efficiently.
They allow lighting conditions to be adjusted according to the needs of each activity while maximizing the use of natural daylight.
Libraries and study areas
In these spaces, it is particularly important to minimize glare and maintain even lighting levels.
Technical fabrics help create comfortable environments that encourage concentration and productivity.
Auditoriums and lecture halls
Motorized systems make it easy to manage large glazed areas and adapt lighting conditions for different types of presentations and events.
Laboratories and technology classrooms
The presence of computers and electronic equipment makes it essential to control glare and ensure excellent screen visibility.
Administrative offices and staff areas
Technical blinds also help improve comfort in workspaces used by teaching and administrative staff.
Solarcheck’s experience in educational facilities
Experience gained from real-world projects is one of the most important factors when selecting solar shading solutions for educational buildings. Every facility has unique requirements depending on its architecture, orientation and intended use, making tailored solutions essential.
At Solarcheck, we have completed numerous projects for schools, universities and educational institutions, helping improve visual and thermal comfort in classrooms, offices, meeting rooms and communal areas.
Pleated blinds for Rey Juan Carlos University

One of our flagship projects involved the installation of 512 guided pleated blinds across three buildings on the Móstoles Campus of Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. The project replaced outdated aluminium Venetian blinds with a more modern, efficient and aesthetically pleasing solution.
The primary objective was to reduce glare in classrooms while improving indoor thermal comfort, creating environments better suited to teaching and learning. Thanks to the flexibility of pleated blinds, we were able to accommodate the building’s different window configurations while maintaining a consistent appearance throughout the campus.

Motorized roller blinds at IESE Madrid

Automation is playing an increasingly important role in educational buildings. A good example is our installation at the new IESE Business School campus in Madrid, a complex characterized by its open spaces and abundant natural daylight.
For this project, 31 Solarcheck motorized roller blinds were installed across offices, boardrooms, workspaces and meeting rooms, together with Japanese panel blinds in the dining area. The solution effectively controlled natural daylight while improving occupant comfort and preserving the building’s contemporary architectural design.

More than 2,000 roller blinds for a French public university

Our international experience also includes the installation of more than 2,000 roller blinds at a French public university, with projects completed across 23 buildings on multiple campuses.
The objective was to reduce glare in classrooms, improve visual comfort for students and lecturers, and maintain more stable indoor temperatures. To achieve this, technical fabrics capable of rejecting up to 74% of solar energy were selected, helping create more comfortable and energy-efficient learning environments. In lecture theatres and projection rooms, blackout fabrics that completely block incoming light were also installed to provide optimal viewing conditions.
